Kenya Premier League defending champions Gor Mahia
were held to a one all draw at City Stadium by Thika United on Sunday.
Gor Mahia came to the match knowing that only a win
was going to help them retain their position at the summit of the Kenya Premier
League table as their arch rivals and 2012 champions Tusker Football Club were
only three points adrift and a better goal difference record.
The match started at a frenetic speed with both
teams intent on scoring early. Against the run of play, Thika United took the
lead after a lackluster defending from the K’Ogalo brigade. James Mburu managed
to put finishing touch on a cross from David Kingatua in the 26th
minute and in the process silenced Gor Mahia fans who were all delirium in the
stadium.
It did not last long before parity was restored in
the 36th minute through the boots of Ugandan import, Dan Serunkuma
who sent Thika United goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot. This was
after Thika defender Vincent Omumbo had handled the ball in the box.
From there on, it was an end to end affair as both
teams upped the tempo in search of the winning goal. Gor Mahia’s new signing;
Arthur Ssemazi almost made a dream debut with a thunderous shot that graced the
outside of the woodwork.
He was not done yet as he made a defense splitting
pass to pick fullback Kevin Oluoch who could only manage to sky his cross to
the fans in the terraces.
Thika United sensing full time almost stole victory
from the champions were it not for the woodwork which intervened ensuring that
both teams ended the match with a one all score line.
In the process Gor Mahia lost their position at the
summit as they were dethroned by Tusker F.C who were able to sneak a solitary
goal past Western Stima through the boots of mercurial attacking midfielder,
Brian Osumba.
Gor Mahia is now sitting second on the table albeit
with similar points as Tusker, but with an inferior goal difference.
